A key person insurance calculator that shows three methods side by side

The owner describes one person the business depends on: their compensation, the profit they drive, what replacing them would cost and the loans they guarantee. Your agency receives three coverage estimates and the gap above existing cover.

This key person insurance calculator estimates how much life insurance a business should carry on an owner or employee using three common methods: a multiple of compensation, contribution to profits, and replacement cost including guaranteed debts. It suggests additional coverage from the highest method minus existing cover. Agencies use it to start business-owner conversations with numbers.

What the inputs tell you before the call

InputsWhat it tells your producer
Annual Salary & BenefitsTotal compensation gives a first read on underwriting capacity, since insurers often frame limits as a multiple of it.
Annual Profit They GenerateProfit tied to one person shows how concentrated the business is and how strongly the owner feels the risk.
Years to RecoverA long recovery period signals a specialist or rainmaker who is hard to replace, which supports a larger face amount.
Business Debts They GuaranteeGuaranteed loans mean a lender is involved and a collateral assignment may be needed; the timeline may be driven by the loan.
Existing Key Person CoverageShows whether this is new business or an increase, and whether an older policy needs review.

Your first call

How do you open a key person lead without overselling?

The owner has already put a dollar value on a colleague or themselves. Acknowledge the method they leaned on, verify the financials, and explain the notice-and-consent step early.

  1. 01Your three methods ranged from [lowest] to [highest], and the calculator used [method used] to suggest [additional coverage]. Which of those figures feels closest to what would happen to the business?
  2. 02You listed [guaranteed debts] in loans this person guarantees. Does the lender require life insurance as a condition of the loan? That can affect ownership and assignment.
  3. 03One process point before we go further: employer-owned life insurance needs the insured's written notice and consent before the policy is issued, under IRC 101(j). Is the key person aware you are looking at this?

Where to place it on your site

  • Business owner or executive benefits page

Owners researching key person protection get a sized estimate instead of a generic explanation.

  • Commercial client portal or newsletter

Existing commercial clients are the easiest key person conversations to start.

  • Content about SBA or bank loans

Guaranteed debt is a strong trigger, and lenders sometimes require life coverage.

What are the three key person methods the calculator uses?

Multiple of compensation multiplies salary and benefits by a rule-of-thumb factor, often five to ten. Contribution to profits multiplies the annual profit the person generates by the years to recover. Replacement cost adds recruiting and training, profit lost during the transition and business debts they guarantee. The highest method, minus existing cover, becomes the suggestion.

Showing all three is deliberate. Owners who distrust a single rule of thumb can see that different reasonable approaches land in a range, and the result names the method used for the suggestion.

Insurers apply their own financial underwriting to key person cases, so the amount an insurer will issue may differ. The calculator says so, and the producer's job is to bridge the estimate and what underwriting will accept.

Which agencies should offer a key person calculator?

Life agencies that work with business owners, commercial-lines agencies that want to round out accounts with life coverage, and benefits brokers who already know the owner. Professional practices, agencies, contractors, family businesses and startups with a founder whose relationships drive revenue are natural audiences for the calculator.

A commercial P&C agency with no life department can still embed it and route the leads to a licensed life partner, as long as the lead form and consent language reflect that.

It pairs naturally with buy-sell funding: owners worried about losing a key person are often co-owners who have never funded their agreement.

Terms the widget explains

Key person insurance
Life (and sometimes disability) insurance a business buys on an owner or employee whose loss would seriously hurt it. The business owns the policy, pays the premiums and is the beneficiary, and uses the payout to cover lost profit, recruit a replacement or reassure lenders and clients.
Multiple-of-compensation method
Coverage equal to a multiple of the person's total compensation, often 5 to 10 times. It is simple and is the way many insurers frame their underwriting limits, but it does not measure the person's actual effect on profit.
Contribution-to-profits method
The yearly profit attributable to the person times the years it would take the business to recover. $120,000 a year for three years suggests $360,000 of coverage.
Replacement-cost method
The cost of finding and training a successor, plus profit lost during the transition and any business debts the person guarantees that a lender might call. It focuses on the immediate cash the business would need.
Notice and consent (IRC 101(j))
For employer-owned life insurance, the employee must be told in writing and consent before the policy is issued, and the business must file Form 8925 each year. Without this, part of the death benefit can become taxable to the business.
Tax treatment
Premiums for key person life insurance are generally not tax-deductible when the business is the beneficiary, and a properly documented death benefit is generally received income-tax-free. Confirm the details with a tax adviser.

Compliance notes for this line

  • Coverage estimates are rules of thumb, not underwriting decisions. Insurers set their own financial underwriting limits, and only a licensed life producer can recommend and place coverage.
  • Employer-owned life insurance requires written notice and consent before issue under IRC 101(j), plus annual Form 8925 reporting. Point clients to their tax adviser; this is not tax advice.
  • Producers need a life insurance license and carrier appointments in each state where they market. Licensing varies by state.
  • Get TCPA-compliant consent before calling or texting leads, and make sure your lead form names who will contact the owner.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Answers first, details after.

How does the calculator choose the suggested coverage?

It calculates all three methods, takes the highest and subtracts existing key person coverage. The result row called Method Used names which approach produced the suggestion, so the owner and your producer can see why.

What compensation multiple should owners use?

The default is only a starting point. The tooltip says insurers often allow up to five to ten times compensation, depending on age and underwriting. The owner can adjust it, and the lead shows what they chose.

Why are guaranteed business debts included?

Loans the key person personally guarantees can be called on their death. Including them in the replacement-cost method shows the immediate cash the business might need, and it signals that a lender may be part of the conversation.

Does it explain IRC 101(j) to the business owner?

Yes. The definitions explain that the employee must be notified in writing and consent before the policy is issued, that the business files Form 8925 each year, and that missing these steps can make part of the death benefit taxable.

Does it estimate key person premiums?

No. Premiums depend on the insured's age, health and the policy type, so the calculator sizes coverage only. Your producer quotes the premium after reviewing underwriting requirements.

Can it be used for key person disability coverage?

It is built around life insurance. The definitions mention that key person coverage is sometimes disability as well, which gives your producer an opening, and the disability insurance calculator covers the owner's personal income.

Who should fill it in, the owner or the key person?

Usually the owner or a partner, because the inputs are business figures such as profit contribution and recruiting cost. The key person still needs to give written consent before any employer-owned policy is issued.

Where do key person leads go?

They arrive by email, appear in your contacts list with every input and result, and post as JSON to your webhook. Many agencies give business-owner calculators their own webhook so the leads go to a dedicated pipeline.

Which plan includes it?

Every plan, including the free Producer plan, which embeds up to 5 calculators. Agency at $150 a month raises that to 50 and adds webhooks, with a 14-day free trial.
